Meadow Creek Mountaineer

September 10th, 2008 | by tb |

I recently tried Meadow Creek Dairy’s Mountaineer. Meadow Creek Dairy is located in Galax, Virginia.

Mountaineer is an Alpine / mountain style cheese made from Jersey cow’s milk, with a natural washed, brown rind and an off-white to pale yellow interior. The aroma is pungent, with hazelnut, caramel, and grass aromas, that are slightly sharp. The cheese interior is semi-firm with small (eyes) air holes. It has a smooth, moist texture, that is a little crumbly at end. The taste is sharp and earthy, a bit buttery.

This was a nice cheese with a wonderful, complex aroma and taste that was highly enjoyable. Considering that Meadow Creek’s Grayson won first place in the 2008 American Cheese Society’s awards in the Farmstead category, I’m not surprised. Now, just a matter of finding some Grayson!
