Purple Haze

Purple Haze is a fresh goat’s milk cheese from Cypress Grove Chevre. It comes in a three ounce disk packaged in plastic. While I’m not a huge fan of chevre that’s sealed in thick plastic, I had heard about this cheese since it has lavender and fennel pollen, and I like cheeses with interesting additions. It was also a first place winner at the American Cheese Society competition in 2005.

This was a nice cheese with an interesting taste. The typical fresh chevre aroma and tangy taste was there, but it also had a slighly sweet aroma. The only issue I had was that there was a bit of sourness in the taste. It wasn’t enough to be unpleasant, but it took away from the lavender and fennel, and made it taste not as fresh. Interestingly though, in doing some Internet searches, I came across this page from Artisinal’s website that recommended draining the cheese prior to serving to remove the sour taste. What a great tip!  Overall, this was an interesting cheese, but I want to get another and try draining it before making a final recommendation.
