Rockin Horse
June 30th, 2009 | by tb |I was on a quick trip through Whole Foods in ‘jersey and decided to see what local cheeses they had in stock. I’ve been unable to get to the Fair Food Farmstand in Reading Terminal for a couple of weeks, so I’m taking the opportunity to find local cheeses any place I can!
Whole Foods had Calkins Creamery Rockin’ Horse, which I hadn’t seen before and I figured it would be worth a try. Calkins’ cheeses haven’t disappointed yet and worst case, it looked like it would make a very fine grilled cheese. And following on the Lazy lady theme, they come up with some pretty good names, too!
Rockin’ Horse looks like a traditional Cheddar, black wax and all. It is made with raw milk from the farm’s Holstein cows. It turned out to taste just like a young, mild Cheddar with a hint of something that gave it a bit of spice. Upon further investigation, Rockin’ Horse is made in the mild Cheddar-style, but is flavored with horseradish. There wasn’t anything amazing about this cheese. It’s just a very fresh, tasty Cheddar with a slight twist. I really enjoyed it for what it is and would recommend this cheese as a Cheddar replacement on any cheese plate. It has such as fresh taste, with a lovely white paste, which looks awesome contrasted with the black cheesewax rind.
